Spontaneous City: New York

Rei Kawakubo of COMME des GARCONS commissioned London Fieldworks to create a permanent installation for the New Dover Street Market store at 160 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY, which opened on Dec 21, 2013. Referencing Outsider art and Japanese Metabolism, the installation clads a 20m structural column that runs through 6 floors of the building with thousands of individually made birch ply boxes modelled on the facades of New York financial institutions, theatres and art deco sky-scrapers.
